Some of my favourite Immerse activities from Week 2!

There really was an extraordinary breadth and depth of activities on offer for Immerse’s Sidney cohort this year; they really helped the students relax and enjoy themselves after a long day of classes! Some of the highlights included the talent show, college tours, sports day, and mentor quiz night!

It was a privilege to help organize the talent show, which demonstrated the incredible abilities of the students at Immerse. Acts ranged from a poem about motherhood to various solo dances to a stirring rap performance of the Jaden Smith anthem, “Icon.” Then some of the Brazilian and Spanish students wowed the mentor judging panel with their amazing football skills, even integrating a highly entertaining plot. In the story, the Spanish student was robbed, and to get his money back, he had to impress them in a game of one bounce. It was an impressive display befitting the occasion, with many tricks like round-the-worlds, hop-the-worlds, and crossovers!

There was also a very funny re-enactment of the X Factor’s 2008 Seb and Ant performance: in the original performance where the brothers did the Peter Andre song, “Mysterious Girl,” they showed off their (barely) passable singing, juxtaposing it with humorous ad-libbing. The Immerse performance was just as funny, although the judges were much more forgiving than on TV!

Great technical skill was on display in a rousing guitar performance from one of the participants (Berk), which won the soloist category, showing great technical skill. And as if that wasn’t enough, there were also three amazing piano performances – with the deserving winner being Devesh with his rendition of the song from Disney’s Hercules, “Go the Distance.”

The talent show finished with a beautiful, lively DJ performance which got everyone on their feet. This featured a creative mashup of legendary hits such as ABBA’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme,” Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” and “Freed From Desire,” as well as traversing into hip-hop with a brief interlude of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.”

The mentor quiz night was also an amazing evening activity – this featured questions about the mentors, from which college they went to, to their favorite quirks, habits, and trends, and even including guessing whose baby photo was whose. This was a very lively event which really showed the great relationship that the mentors develop with the students as part of the Immerse family.

On the final day, the formal at Sidney and the final night party provided the newly graduated Immerse students with an opportunity to celebrate all of the hard work they’d done at Immerse so far! It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, with the silent disco, the ice cream from Jack’s, and the quiz that the students made for the mentors on themselves, as just some of the main highlights of the occasion!

All in all, the students really loved their time at Immerse, and it was a pleasure for the mentors to lead such a great breadth of activities!
