During this week at Immerse Education, I have had the unique privilege of engaging in academic and intellectual dialogue with a very attentive tutor and eager peers.
Upon arrival, I had assumed that the others who chose to go to this program would be similar to me, with the privilege of travelling internationally. I attend an international school where I’m able to converse with different people from very diverse backgrounds, however, I now realize that being an international student is an immense privilege and my perspective on the programme has since changed.
Before arriving at Immerse, I viewed the programme as one of many things I will have done to heighten my stance in the field of law, but then I met my peers, many of whom see this program as one of the most important academic opportunities they can engage in during their youth. This has made me realize that I’ve forgotten where I came from. I want to work in law, specifically to help those who are less fortunate than myself. Growing up with certain challenges, I’ve always been inspired to solely advance the well-being of others – seeing the passion in others on the course has reminded me of this.
During class time, I came in with the preconception that I was solely going to advance my knowledge in international relations, as it functions as the theory behind international law. Prior to this course, I had experience at Leiden where I completed a short course in immigration law, as well as in an internship I completed at a law firm in Madrid. However, I believe I’ve learned so much more here, particularly from the students around me. The perspective I’ve gained at the international school I attend is distinctly upper-class and I realize I’ve had the privilege now to access such different perspectives that have broadened my understanding of so many things.
My tutor Rangga is proficient in his field and he finds very strong enjoyment in it. I find that his position in the field is where I aspire to be when I reach his age. I appreciate how much he fosters an atmosphere of creativity and humour which ameliorates our likeness to engage in discussion with him.
All in all, being on an Immerse programme has been a uniquely brilliant experience which I will appreciate for reminding me where I come from and what I truly want to accomplish in my life.
